Product Warning - Blue Diamond Almonds

I purchased a 16 oz bag of Blue Diamond Bold Wasabi and Soy Sauce flavored almonds at the Walgreens at 2500 Koke Mill Rd. The package contained regular roasted almonds.

Blue Diamond has been notified of the error through their contact page. I only hope that this is the only problem with that product. If I ever decide to resume purchasing that product, I will do so only on the condition that the package is transparent enough to see the actual product inside.

Here's a rule of thumb to motivate you in exercising your New Years resolutions. If you can't see the actual product through the package, don't buy it.

The new bacon.

I had a pizza a while ago that was almost overcooked. The pepperoni almost fried itself. The pepperoni was slightly crispy on the exposed edges. It was the best pizza I ever had.

This morning I microwaved some pepperoni between two paper towels for about two minutes and fifteen seconds. They were like the best potato chips in the world. They just crumble in your mouth. Next time I have a salad I'm using pepperoni instead of bacon bits.

Plastic storage bags not just for food.

I know someone who washes and re-uses plastic storage bags. I doubt that the designers of those bags had re-use in mind when they created them. Especially bags that have tiny channels or plastic zip tab mechanisms, where bacteria and mildew can accumulate.

However, some online research allowed me to not waste my time reinventing the wheel again. Here are some sites I viewed that provide advice on plastic bags.

The Greenest Dollar. A quick read about washing and re-using Zip-lock bags.

Technology today requires all kinds of accessories such as power cables, monitor cables, USB cables, AC/DC converters, battery chargers, memory cards, lenses, DVDs, manuals, etc. There's really no escaping the necessity for a convenience like Plastic zipper bags, unless you can find more durable containers that are exactly the size you need for specific accessories.

E-How.com. How to pack using plastic zipper storage bags.

It's really a no-brainer but these articles usually have some details in them you might not realize.

Tomato Blight Warning reported at NPR

Do you have tomato plants that look like this?

You may have blight. These plants must be carefully sealed in plastic so as not to spread the blight spores. DO NOT COMPOST. Composting will spread the spores.

NPR reports that this outbreak was similar to that which caused the great potato famine.

A Forgotten Flavor

Can you believe it? I don't know how many years it's been since I had anything Teriyaki. It was popular a few years ago, but then the Buffalo Chicken trend overshadowed Teriyaki and I forgot about it.

I was looking for something new. I wanted whole long-grain rice which is healthier than refined white rice because most of the the nutrients are held within the hulls.

There it was. Not the Long Grain Rice, but the Teriyaki. It was $1.43 today at County Market, which is cheap compared to other condiments that are more popular. I'll bet it will be even cheaper at Aldi's.

Well there you have it. I'll be on a Teriyaki kick for a while.

I wound up getting a box of Uncle Ben's long-gran rice, but when I poured out the package, it was only somewhat long-grain. That fails.

Buffalo Chicken Salad

Containers from previous Chinese take-out.
Cucumber - Diced
Celery - Chopped
Cabbage - Shredded
Grape Tomatoes - Halves
Water Chestnuts - sliced
Rice - (any kind you like)
Boneless Buffalo Chicken pieces from the Deli. (already cooked)

The only cooking is the rice. A cup and a half of rice expands to six cups of cooked rice, just the right amount for the amount of vegetables. Half a bag of shredded cabbage, A whole cucumber, a can of Water Chestnuts, One celery plant, about a half package of grape tomatoes and just under a pound of boneless buffalo chicken pieces.

Beyond that you can be creative with Parmesan cheese, dill weed, parsley flakes, etc.

Pay attention

Snake Oil Online: Who can you believe?

NOBODY.

Health food companies sell products that are accompanied by information about food in general that appears to be adjusted to make the products appear more valuable. Every time I try to better my diet, I do a little research online and the more I look, the more conflicting information I find.

This kind of nutritional disinformation is criminal, Nobody seems to agree on anything and it leads me to the conclusion that disinformation about food is published to be congruent with the actual product being offered.

Two companies (Separate or otherwise) that promote the Alkalinity of foods as more healthy that acidic foods, published their own lists of foods categorized by their alkaline and acid content.

Those lists are contradictory.

This first site does not even overtly identify itself. You must read carefully, and some of the language is in Spanish, however, The address is 999 Park Avenue in New York? Highly suspicious in my opinion.

Here is their list of alkaline and acid foods

http://www.alkaline-alkaline.com/ph_food_chart.html

Here's a sample: (* items that appear on the other list)

List of Alkalizing Fruits

Apple
Apricot
*Avocado
Banana (high glycemic)
Cantaloupe
Cherries
Currants
Dates/Figs
Grapes
*Grapefruit
*Lime
Honeydew Melon
Nectarine
Orange
Lemon
Peach
Pear
Pineapple
All Berries
Tangerine
*Tomato
Tropical Fruits
*Watermelon

List of Acid Fruit

All preserved or jellied
Canned: sugared
Dried, sulphured
Glazed Fruits
Raw with sugar
Bananas if green tipped
Cranberries
Olives, pickled, green

This next company, "Energise For Life" is located in England:

Energise (UK) Ltd T/A Energise For Life
24 Babbage House
Northampton Science Park, Northamptonshire NN3 6LG

Here is the link to their list of Alkaline and acid foods:

Here is a sample:

List of Alkaline Fruits

Lemon
Lime
Avocado
Tomato
Grapefruit
Watermelon (is neutral)
Rhubarb

List of Acid Fruits

"All fruits aside from those listed in the alkaline column."

According to the last statement, most of the fruits on the other company's list of alkaline fruits, are actually acidic. So, who do I believe? I don't know how to get this information from the FDA or USDA, or whether or not alkalinity is really important anyway.

I started eating a lot of Almonds recently and noticed that I was actually sleeping through the night, and feeling a whole lot better. This is what started the whole thing in the first place.

I guess I'll just keep eating more Almonds for now.

Sonic in J-Ville all a thunder at Craigslist.com

Springfield, Illinois Rants-and-Raves section on Craigslist.com is a cornucopia of catastrophe! Warning! Vulgarity, Racism below!

The following are posts from Craigslist Rants and Raves section and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of this blogger, manager, or subsidiaries.

While I realize that working fast-food isn't a dream job, nor does it require a degree, I think that having a manager who didn't even finish the 5th grade is a disgrace to the local store and the company as a whole.

Also - promoting people who aren't qualified to be in a leadership position - not smart. There are some employees that have been there a long time and who deserve a promotion, but they keep getting looked over -- because they don't have the right skin color. That's right - unless you are black or act black, at Sonic, you CANNOT get a promotion... Truth is truth here.

I'm tired of you people fucking over the employees who bust their asses for your store --- promising promotions, more hours, etc.... and then never giving them --- you people are assholes.

###

Welcome to the world of Obama

###

oh please. like Obama gives a rat's ass who works at the Sonic in Jacksonville!!! lol.....you probly should check yourself into the nearest State Facility for a med check or something. As for the Sonic in Jacksonville. I live in Jacksonville and have gone there exactly two times. Both times all I saw were white workers. Both times I left less than happy with not only the service but the rudeness and lack of social skills shown by the wait staff. The last time I went with an order for our office. We were hitting the 'happy hour' time and I had an order for four drinks. I ordered the drinks of our choice off of the appropriate menu. The woman on the intercom gave me a price that was what I had figured the 'half price special' to be. When the slightly slovenly waitress (who was white) came out with our drinks on a tray and announced that I owed her almost $10.00 for the drinks I pointed out it was the alleged 'happy hour'. Her response was...'well, these ain't on the half off list'. I pointed out that they were most certainly on the list that was posted right by my car. I also told her that the wait staff on the intercom had quoted a different, and much lower, price. She then asked what I wanted her to do with the drinks. I told her I wanted them on the agreed on original price. She sort of snorted and said she would have to check with her manager on duty. She came back out in a bit with the drinks and stated, 'the manager said they ain't on the half price list'. She again asked what I wanted her to do with them and ask for almost $10.00. I told her she could take them back to her manager, pour them out in front of her and, tell her that she just lost four customers! She stood there with her drinks on a try, mouth hanging open as I left. Have not been back since. And, btw, I am white.

###

Here is a list of the current managers @ Sonic
co-managers: white guy and black guy
asst. mgrs: white chick (who acts black), black guy, black guy, white guy

white guy (asst. mgr) is the morning manager - he is by far the nicest, customer friendly manager in the place.
the other asst. managers are nothing short of lazy asses who have nothing better to do than talk on their phones. They could care less about the customers.
The black co-manager has nothing but a 5th grade education. He cannot spell, and lacks the common sense to be a manager.

The rest of the management and crew leaders (those people who wear red shirts) are thieves. As an inside source into what goes on at this store, I can say that if corporate ever investigated or sent someone to observe, more than half the crew would be gone.

As for your order --- it's the afternoon shift - sure, you're waitress was white, but I can almost guarantee you the manager was black and so was the rest of the kitchen staff. Chances are, they were back there fucking around and not paying attention to your order. If you would have looked at the screen under the menu, you would have noticed that the price for your drinks was on it. Unless you ordered something besides a slush, soda, ice tea, or lemonade - your drinks would not have been half price. I also have a hard time believing that they refused to acknowledge the price difference. I think you're full of shit - and you just wanted something for nothing.

###

as an afterthought...

more than likely, the girl who brought you your drinks --- her name was Sarah (she was fired, btw)

Your total probably WAS the happy hour price -- but she wanted to make sure you have her a tip -- which is why your total was nearly 10 dollars. If I were you, I would have personally spoken with the manager on duty. Whatever price is quoted over the intercom is the one that is recognized in the computer --- you should have asked for a receipt. Pouring the drinks out is TECHNICALLY theft, and they could have very easily have called the cops.

Just a thought.

###

To the first person who responded to my posting. I hate to tell you but, if you have one white and one black manager and two white and two black assistant managers, that's pretty equal. You know...half and half. It certainly doesn't lend any credence to your statements of racial injustices. As to your statement of the one having a fifth grade education. Well, I find that hard to believe that a company would put someone in a managerial position with such a low level of education. My guess is that you're just a disgruntled ex (hopefully!!!) employee who couldn't cut it and had to have someone to blame it on. As for your statement of, "I think you're full of shit - and you just wanted something for nothing. " Your claim is once again without merit. I simply refused to pay a higher price for merchandise that: 1) was being offered during a sales pitch at a sales promotional price 2) that was clearly defined on the menu as being a part of the sales group 3) after having been told an initially much lower price. So I did not 'want something for nothing', I simply wanted the merchandise ordered at the price indicated.
To the second responder, I want to clarify that I did not pour out the drinks. When the wait staff returned with them the second time and again asked what I wanted her to do with them, I refused to purchase them at the inflated price and told her she could take them back to her manager and they could pour them down the drain. I did not pour them out.
As to your suggestion that I should have spoken directly with the manager, in retrospect, I probably should have. As for the slovenly Sarah...I wish her good luck! After hearing that she is no longer employed...I may go back! I do like their onion rings!!!!!

###

Ok so now this nut is bashing Sonic and Darcy's Pint two wonderful business's. Anybody see a pattern here and who's next on their hit list. Do not believe anything you read on here that is negative about any business or person. This person is trying to destroy what Cl is all about so don't fall for it.

###

First off -

The Sonic bullshit in Jacksonville concerns me directly. I hear about these things that go on there on a daily basis, and I've had about enough of it. If you don't believe me about the manager with the 5th grade education, go in and ask to talk to him - and ask him about his education. YES, he only has a 5th grade education - he dropped out of school.

I'm not bashing Sonic - and obviously, Spfld person, you have nothing better to do that read something into a topic that isn't there. Perhaps you should step into MY shoes for a day and then you would understand what I mean.

I'm all for equality in the workplace - but when a good employee is looked over because the THEN current manager at Sonic had a guilty conscience over never hiring African-Americans when he was the manager at Steak N Shake and wanted to make sure he was being 'fair', I think a line needs to be drawn. I think the business isn't being run to the best of it's ability, and i believe that it's time the employees there who have to deal with the mundane bullshit from the managers day after day take a stand and defend themselves instead of being treated like shit by these so-called assistant managers and crew leaders. When assistant managers and crew leaders have nothing better to do that stand or sit around and bullshit with each other while they do nothing that concerns the workplace itself, or whether they are talking on their cell phones instead of helping with the orders on screen - they should have their privileges stripped from them. There ARE people who work there that DO deserve those positions.

As far as service there goes, there are certain times of day when you should/shouldn't go to Sonic, especially if you are looking for the best customer service. Obviously, happy hour isn't your best bet for the best service. But I'm telling you - I'm NOT bashing the restaurant - just the lack of professionalism that some of its employees have. All-in-all, it's one of the best places to eat in Jacksonville - the food is always fresh and they have NO problem customizing your order the way you want it. Unlike SOME fast food places here in town, they give a shit about their customers.

So, Spfld - why don't you shut the fuck up when the topic at hand doesn't even concern you or your city. This section IS the rant and rave section - so piss off.

###

My rant was about the Waitresses screwing over the bus boys at D'Arcy's Pint. Nothing to do with Sonic, YOU FREAK!! I believe this is where you go and complain about things. Isn't it????????????? So what is your bitch, you bitch. It's one thing to be screwed over by the government but for the waitresses at D'arcy's Pint screw over the bus boys everyday is totally EVIL. They get about 11 dollars a day for spending 6 hours clearing tables allowing the waitresses to serve more patrons and get more tips that they don't report. Teenage boys working there are trying to do the right thing and be good citizen earning money the LEGAL way. Unlike the GREEDY waitiress who screw them over.

###

Obviously you seem to be a little racist, well you should move down to the south in the towns that disagree with Abraham Lincoln.
You are one bitter ex employee.
I am white, and act white, and grew up on the nice side of town and worked at Sonic, and was offered to be a Manager.
I know the GM of Jville, and worked in the store he trained in, and know the Supervisor, and prev supervisor.
NONE of them are racist. If the only employyes taht do well in Jville are black well that just means there better,
and that there are some idiot white people working there.
Its not hard to make food and drinks and deliver it.
You probably look like scum so they didnt want you in the store, or for customers to see you.
And about the happy hour, the customer if they are smart enough to look at the credit card screen it will tell them the total.
NO ICE CREAM IS 1/2 PRICE, that also includes cream clushes, they have ice cream in them. coffee drinks are also
full price. if they would read the details they would know that.

###

BTW...if you do still work there, it probably won't be for much longer.
You're talking so much trash I don't think he will keep you on when you're so bitter.
And im sure it won't be too hard to figure out who you are.

###

wow - you know they say assumptions are the mother of all fuck ups.

I've never worked @ sonic drive in, thank you very much. And if you know the GM so well, then you would know that he got a promotion and that 2 assistant managers have moved up to be co-managers.

Keep on reading more into that than what's there.

Yeah - maybe I am racist - but you find me ONE person who doesn't harbor a little bit of racism - whether it be for people of other races, or some their own color. If you're so smart, then YOU figure out who I am ---

###

You're all kinds of wrong...

I've never worked @ Sonic - in J-Town, or anywhere else for that matter.

Talk about a disgruntled employee/ex-employee. You're amusing me though. Keep trying - you fail again.

###

So you admit that you dont have a job and that your wasting my hard earned tax dollars? You are scum, you are lower than scum, its dead beats like you that sit on here all day and bitch and moan about other people when your the real fucking problem, do us all a favor get off your dead beat ass and get a JOB so we dont have to keep paying you welfare.

###

There is no such thing as co-managers at Sonic you dumb ass. There are only assistant managers and GMs and up.

Get your facts straight.

And the GM was trained to be a GM, he was not given a promotion.

###

Get your own R&R and leave Springfield alone with your Sonic Jville crap. It is like the school for the dumb and blind took over.

###

To who ever is posting these things about Sonic. GET A LIFE....AND A NEW JOB!

Show Me restaurant raked over the coals on Craigslist

Craigslist's Rants and Raves section once again proves more entertaining and informative than "regler" news.

A customer get's angry about an experience and sooner than later other people with similar experiences come out of the woodwork.

Unlike "real" reporting (which college has taught me there is no such thing) People can post almost anything they want. It may not stay up very long if it gets flagged (which is frequently the focus of many conspiracy theories).

I've grown in my admiration for the efforts of anonymous authors at Craigslist. They are colorful and more sincere than one might assume.

So here they are:

I called Showme's this afternoon and asked "Do you have any wing specials today"? The girl cherrfully said "Yes, 35 cent wings from 3pm till 6pm & 9pm till midnight.
My wife and I went in at 5:00 and ordered 40 wings thinking that if we didnt eat them all we would take a few home for late night snaking or whatever.
My wife ordered Soda, I asked for Water. I was then informed that if I was buying the 35 cent wings that I MUST purchase a drink. Beer, wine, liquor, soda.. SOMETHING.
Ok, I am not a soft drink fan, but I reluctantly ordered a soda for 2.50 (roughly). We also ordered side orders of fries.
We ate 25 wings between the 2 of us and asked for a container to take the remaining 15 wings home... no way.
They REFUSED to let us take them out of the restaurant. Even though they were on my bill - and I was being charged for them I was unable to take them with me.
BULLSHIT!!!!
I complained in a nice & civilized way - FINALLY after ALMOST becoming a dick, the manager (who was a bitch) took the wings off of my bill that we didnt eat. What a douche bag. I simply asked "why cant I just take them". Against their policy.

I will never step foot in that bastard again!

Am I wrong?

my question is what happened to the 15 wings they took off his plate and bill? did they go to the next wing customer? it dont make any sense to take them off peoples bill then throw them away everytime. also is there a sign or does the waitress warn you to only order what you can eat because you cant take leftovers home......wow im not going there lol

It is illegel to resell leftovers, especially if they were placed on the table in front of you. That is a serious health code violation.
If it is true that they took left-over wings off your table and refused to let you take them with you, they either must be trying to keep a recipe secret, or they were planning to re-sell your food.
Good job getting the difference in your bill back.

Not to start a big thing but it's a "special" for dine in only. You cant go to an all you can eat place and ask for several to go boxes....... Kinda the same thing. You got reimbursed for not understanding this so why complain? Staff? Ask for the owners information and talk to them. Squeaky Wheel Gets The Greasin.....
Thursdays from 5-7 they have 5 wings for .93C (dine in only). I honestly think they have some of the best wings in town and there specials are very good.
I also recommend Westwoods on west Jefferson for there 40sum different flavors of wings. Very good stuff.

There actually is a sign back by the kitchen/bathroom that does clearly state "must purchase a drink & NO carry outs". The manager pointed that out to me.
I simply stated that had I needed to take a piss, or speak to management BEFORE I placed my order, I would have figured it out.
I dont think that they resold them. I simply think that the female manager was playing tough guy. She was a bit "dykish" if that is a word.
I am a good sized guy and I feel that she was trying to be tough and show me that I couldn't push her around. I will also add that I was completely calm, I didnt raise my voice, I didnt
use any profanity what so ever. I did tell her that the policy, and the way that she was enforcing it was preposterous, ludicrous and borderline nazi-like.

I dont think that they were worried about recipie either. I think that they were making an example. NO CARRYOUTS what so ever on special wing prices.
I can appreciate that - I just think that they should make that policy more visible.

Show me's can go take an arenotical intercourse on an orbiting pastry.
They aernt the only game in town.

The industrial sabotage of pita bread.

I was looking for something to change-up my menu so I thought I would get some pita bread at County Market out on White Oaks Drive. No luck.

I looked in the bread isle, I looked by the cheese where they have tortillas, I even looked down the isle where they have the special taco seasonings and Chinese food items. They had more taco shells and tortillas, but I still couldn't find any Pita bread.

I wondered what would happen if I bothered to track someone down and ask.
One might say "No we're out of them, nobody was buying them so we stopped carrying it."
I would not be surprised if that were the case, I was prepared with a response for just that kind of scenario. I think I know why nobody was buying Pita bread.

Because the public has been sold on the false idea that you are supposed to wrap Pita bread around your food. Specifically, by industries that don't have the capacity to competitively produce Pita bread.

For a while, people probably bought pita bread and tried to wrap it around their food and thought "This is stupid!" they would say, "It's just as easy to wrap a tortilla around it!"

People would get frustrated just trying to eat it that way, even when it's made for them at a fast-food restaurant.

That is the whole idea! Drive a wedge between the public and pita bread, so tortilla manufacturers will rule the market! (pardon me while I adjust my tin-foil hat...)

You're not supposed to wrap pita brad around your food dumb-ass! Your supposed to split the edge of the pita bread and it will open up like a pocket! You then stuff it and eat it!

And that's my best guess as to why County Market out on White Oaks Drive doesn't have pita bread.

Pasfield Family Values

Recently I came into some information about the restaurant preferences of local members of the Pasfield family. Who are the Pasfields? It's quite an interesting history lesson and you may be able to get more information by visiting PasfieldHouse.com

Anyway, they have a fundamental rule about eating only at local restaurants. Specifically, restaurants that are not franchises that remove far more money from the local economy than add to it. I tend to agree. I shamefully break that rule on most occasions, like anyone else. I know one of them secretly likes Steak n Shake, so I don't feel so bad.

What does that have to do with the guys in the photograph?

If the picture looks unfamiliar, these guys were protesting around the construction of the new Texas Roadhouse restaurant that was built near White Oaks Mall at Iles Ave and Veterans Parkway. Why were they protesting? Because they are local union construction workers who were passed over in favor of cheaper labor from out-of-state.

Yep. The restaurant was built with labor from out-of-state.

The company is publicly traded (TXRH) with a value of $8.76 a share as of a few minutes ago.

Gravy Brain

You know how you like certain things at certain restaurants, but not everything at each restaurant? Is it a coincidence, or a conspiracy?

I love the Breakfast Horseshoe at D&J's but I think I will stick with the cheese sauce instead of the gravy option. The gravy's not nearly as thick as Bob Evan's

If you want monster gravy. Just ask for some gravy and biscuits at Bob Evan's. Be prepared. You may want to ask for extra biscuits. The gravy is thick with meat.

The more I think about it, the more I just want to get carry out gravy from Bob Evan's and put it on Nachos!

According to NutritionData.com one cup of Gravy, beef, canned, ready-to-serve has only 123 calories. I was expecting more than 500 calories, but there is a huge trade-off.

The gravy described at NutritionData.com has a sodium content of 1,305 milligram. Over half of a whole day's recommended dose of salt (based on a 2000 calorie diet.)

Only Sake!?

I like Sake, it's an alcoholic beverage made with rice and it has a nice bite. The website www.nutritiondata.com has an affinity for it as well, even though sake has very few traces of nutritional value, it is lower in calories per ounce than any other alcoholic beverage, by about half.

NutritionData.com has a nice function called a pantry, where you can keep your own recipes and ingredients. You can create your own recipes and then look at the total nutritional value of what you created. Very cool.

Another good thing is that you don't get spammed by them if you sign up. I almost forgot about it for the fact that I had to go to the store and wanted to check if I should add more rice to my diet. So,

NutritionData.com, here I come to see what nutrition data you have on rice. What? Sake? That can't be the only reference to rice you have in your database!

FAIL!
